Brazilian works until May 29 just to pay taxes

by

Brazilians will need to work 149 days in 2022, that is, until May 29, just to pay taxes. The estimate is from the IBPT (Brazilian Institute of Planning and Taxation).

The date is the same as in 2021, which, according to the executive president of the IBPT, João Eloi Olenike, reflects a stagnation justified by the pandemic.

“The study was carried out considering the base period between May 2021 and April 2022. In this period, due to the social isolation necessary to fight the coronavirus, there was a retraction in the production and circulation of wealth in the country”, says Olenike.

The number of days worked to pay taxes, fees and contributions varies by income bracket, as shown in the table below.

Monthly income Days worked to pay taxes

Up to BRL 3,000

141 days or until May 21

Between BRL 3,000 and BRL 10,000

157 days or until June 6

Over BRL 10 thousand

150 days or until May 30

The researchers also point out that between 1986 and 2022, there was an almost constant increase in the number of days worked to pay taxes. In 1986, there were 82 days, corresponding to 2 months and 22 days. Today, the required period is 4 months and 29 days.
