The FDA, the US health agency, is investigating an outbreak of salmonella infection that may be linked to consumption of Jif brand peanut butter produced at the JM Smucker Company factory in Kentucky.
A study by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) indicated that four out of five infected people consumed one of the varieties of the Jif product before falling ill.
The FDA sequenced a sample collected in 2010 at the plant in question and reported correspondence with the strain causing the outbreak today.
JM Smucker Company has voluntarily recalled some products that contain investigated batch numbers.
