This Wednesday (25) is celebrated the Nerd Pride Day. The date, which honors lovers of technology, games and science fiction, was born in 2006 and has become more famous as nerd culture becomes popular.
The day was chosen because of the premiere of the first film in the Star Wars series, which inspires a lot of technology and science fiction aficionados. The space-set saga premiered on May 25, 1977.
It is customary for brands to take a ride and launch promotions for the public – which has already been happening this year and should intensify by the end of the week.
The homage to nerds emerged in Spain. The author of the book “Orgulloso de Ser Friki” (friki is what the Spaniards call nerds) Germán MartÃnez, or Señor Buebo, as he introduces himself, calls himself the creation of the date.
The story, he writes on his website, began on an online forum in the Marvel universe, a superhero comic book brand that has now become a billion-dollar franchise.
“A clash arose between those who called themselves nerds and those who saw it as an insult,” writes Buebo. From this discussion, at the beginning of 2006, the idea of creating the Nerd Pride Day website, to organize celebrations, would have come.
The initial objective of creating a festive day was to obtain discounts in bookstores and specialized stores – a goal achieved in the first year.
Buebo attributes part of the success to “El PaÃs”. A week before the 25th, nerd pride was the subject of the cover of the leisure supplement of the Spanish newspaper. The space boosted media appearances and “revolutionized everything,” he said.
Publicity was so great that, on May 25, 2006, the bus route that passed through Plaza de Callao, the center of the celebration in Madrid, had to reroute. “All sorts of geeks were concentrated there,” writes Buebo.
Today, although celebrations in the square have become sparse, the event has been incorporated into the calendar of nerds around the world.
Towel Day is celebrated on the same date
Even before the release of Nerd Pride Day in 2006, May 25th was already important in the middle.
That’s because, since 2001, fans of Douglas Adams, author of the series “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, honor the British writer by going out with a towel strapped to his backpack or shoulder.
In one of the books of his most famous series, he gives functions to the object, which would be indispensable for traveling through space.
“You can wear the towel as a coat as you cross the cold moons of Beta de Jagla; you can lie on it on the gleaming marble-sand beaches of Santragino V, breathing in the intoxicating sea vapors; you can sleep under it under the twinkling stars. red in the desert world of Kakrafoon”, he describes in his book.
Adams died on May 11, 2001, and the tributes were arranged after two weeks — on the 25th of the same month. Today, the two celebrations, which involve the same audience, were unified.
