Mônica Bergamo: Gas cylinder in SP compromises up to 11% of the income of the poorest, says study

by

The price of cooking gas cylinders compromises the income of the poorest families in the city of São Paulo by up to 11%, according to a study carried out by the Pólis Institute that raised prices at 337 retail outlets in the capital.

POCKET

In a household with a monthly budget of five minimum wages, for example, the share corresponding to gas would represent between 1.6% and 2.4% of income — or up to ten times less than the cost of a cylinder for a family that lives with half minimum wage.

VULNERABLE

The survey also shows that the rise in prices has a more severe impact on families headed by women with an income of up to one minimum wage. Family nuclei that inhabit regions where the percentage of the black population is higher than the municipal average, currently 37%, also suffer more.

TWO WEIGHTS

“Research shows that the most important source of energy for feeding families in urban households is disproportionately more expensive for the most vulnerable population”, says the general coordinator of the Pólis Institute, Danielle Klintowitz.

WEIGHTS 2

The study in São Paulo states that the cost of gas is not uniform throughout the city and does not vary according to the income pattern of the resident population. Although the highest prices are concentrated in areas of greater purchasing power —up to an average cost of R$132.50—, in the two poorest fifths of the city of São Paulo the average price of cooking gas is R$122, 56.

SLICE

The cheapest gas was found in Jardim Vila Formosa, for R$ 100, and the most expensive, in Vila Carrão, for R$ 145. In other words: the most expensive cooking gas in São Paulo would capture 24% of a family’s income. who live on half the minimum wage, and the cheapest, 16%, an expressive share.

MISCELLANEOUS

And, if in low-income neighborhoods, such as Cidade Líder, Parque do Carmo and São Mateus, the cylinder costs around R$113, in other more vulnerable neighborhoods each unit costs around R$130. This is the case of Jaraguá. , Tremembé, Guaianases and Grajaú.
