Panel SA: Airlines are considering going to court against the pollution tax that will be charged at Guarulhos airport

Airlines are considering going to court to challenge the pollution tax that will be charged from 2023 on planes that land and take off at Guarulhos international airport, according to Dany Oliveira, director general of IATA (International Air Transport Association) in Brazil.

Approved in the municipality last week, the so-called TAP (Environmental Preservation Tax) aims to mitigate the environmental impacts of atmospheric pollution and turbine noise, according to the city hall. It focuses on the total weight of the aircraft measured before takeoff.

The sector has been criticizing the measure and has already released a statement against it.

“This bill is a setback for Brazilian aviation, which is in a moment of recovery after a big drop during the pandemic”, says Oliveira.

He says that charging TAP could generate an annual cost of at least R$185 million for airlines, considering an average of 140,000 departures per year in 2019, and about 80 tons per domestic flight and 200 tons per flight. international flight.

The director of IATA argues that airlines are already working to reduce their carbon footprint with a commitment to eliminate emissions by 2050. Therefore, they would already be committed to environmental preservation actions, TAP’s focus.

In the current scenario of recovery in the air sector, added to the skyrocketing value of fuel, Dany believes that airlines would not be able to absorb this new charge. TAP also arrives at a time when the government is discussing the change in the baggage check policy, criticized by the sector.
