President Jair Bolsonaro said this Tuesday (31) that he counts on the faith and resilience of the population to beat inflation, saying again that the whole world has suffered the consequences of high prices.
“We are more and more back to normal, obviously taking into account the economy before and after the pandemic. We also know that a war more than 10 thousand kilometers away causes inconvenience to all of us in Brazil and for the whole world” , said during a visit to the “Bahia Farm Show”, in LuÃs Eduardo Magalhães, in the interior of Bahia.
“The whole world has been suffering consequences, including inflation, especially of food and fuel. This is not something that only happens in Brazil, but we count on the population, on its resilience, on its faith and its strength to overcome this obstacle”, he reinforced.
Inflation has been one of Bolsonaro’s main concerns in the re-election race, as a source in the president’s informal campaign coordination recently told Reuters.
In May, the IPCA-15 (Extended National Consumer Price Index-15) rose 0.59%, according to the IBGE.
Despite the lower variation than in April —when the IPCA-15 rose 1.73%—, the monthly reading of the preview of Brazilian inflation represents the biggest variation for a month of May since 2016. Even with the relief, the index passed accumulating in 12 months inflation of 12.20%, the highest result since November 2003.
Bolsonaro has appeared in the polls behind former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in the dispute for the Planalto Palace.
