Rent compromises 38% of family income in SP, says survey

by

Spending on rent in São Paulo commits 38% of the family’s monthly income, the highest in the five regions of the country, according to the QuintoAndar Housing Census released this Thursday (9).

According to a survey carried out in partnership with Datafolha, spending in the state is, on average, R$1,078 per month, while the national average for rent payments is R$686.

Among those who intend to move in the next two years, 3 out of 5 renters aim to own their own home, a number similar to that recorded by the survey in the country. Most, however, do not plan financially due to lack of money.

According to the survey, the most financially prepared for the change are men (52%) and residents of metropolitan regions (51%).

Financing continues to be the main way to make the dream of owning your own home come true. According to the survey, it compromises the family income less: 27% per month, on average.

Jonas Marchetti, QuintoAndar’s Credit Director, says that it is necessary to evaluate personal finances to find out which business pays off the most at the stage of life in which each tenant is. Because transaction costs are expensive, he says, it’s essential to plan how long you expect to stay in the property. “If it’s a short time, maybe it’s better to rent than buy,” he says.

The census interviewed 3,186 people, aged 21 and over, in all five regions of the country (Southeast, South, North, Northeast and Midwest) between October 11 and 21, 2021.

According to QuintoAndar, there is also a representative sample from the metropolitan regions of Rio, São Paulo and Belo Horizonte and from the macro-poles of Baixada Santista and Ribeirão Preto.

The margin of error is plus or minus two percentage points for the total sample.
