Brazil opened 277,018 formal job vacancies in May, according to the Caged (General Register of Employed and Unemployed) released this Tuesday (28) by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. The result came above the net creation of 192,750 jobs projected by analysts in a Reuters poll.

In the unadjusted series, the May result was the second best for the month in 12 years, second only to May 2021, which had a very similar result of 278,705.

Last month’s data is the result of 1.961 million admissions and 1.684 million dismissals. As a result, the stock of formal jobs in the country reached 41.7 million, the highest total for the month of May in the series started in 2010.

In the month, there was a positive balance in all sectors, with emphasis on vacancies in services, with the opening of 120,294 positions, followed by commerce, with 47,557. There were 46,975 formal jobs created in industry, 35,445 in construction and 26,747 in the agricultural sector.

In terms of regions, the Southeast created 147,846 jobs in the month and the Northeast opened 48,847 jobs. The balance was 33,978 in the Midwest and 25,585 in the South, while the North opened 16,091 posts.

From January to May, 1.052 million jobs were opened, compared to an opening of 1.161 jobs in the same period in 2021, according to the series with adjustments.

Regarding the average hiring salary, there was a decrease in May. The value was BRL 1,898.02, compared to BRL 1,916.07 in April.

The government has also recorded an increase in unemployment insurance claims. The number for the month stood at 597,337 requests, up from 567,221 in the previous month and 527,068 in May 2021.
