Fix will not be known until January 2023

Although the government’s forecasts for the minimum wage and social security benefits will be made this year, the exact correction of the values will only be known in January 2023, when the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) releases the 2022 inflation.

In 2022, the final adjustment was announced by the government only on January 20th.

The index, currently in the double digits, should fall a little in the coming months, as forecast by analysts, with the ICMS ceiling (Tax on the Circulation of Goods and Services) for fuels and with the limitation of the tariff flag in light. However, high international prices will not give a truce to inflation in 2022.

Minimum wage lost real gain

Since the government of Michel Temer, the minimum wage no longer has a real gain, above inflation. The policy of valuing the minimum, which is also the floor for pensions, began in 2006, during Lula’s (PT) first term and was maintained until Dilma Rousseff (PT) left.

Fernando Henrique Cardoso (PSDB) even adjusted above inflation during his term to correct the distortion of values inherited from the hyperinflation era.

The policy of greater correction of the minimum initiated in 2006 considered the inflation of the previous year plus the growth of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of two years before. When the GDP was zero, the adjustment was only that of inflation. The rule was modified in the Bolsonaro government and both the minimum wage and other benefits now receive only correction by the INPC.

In Bolsonaro’s administration, not only was there a decoupling from GDP, but the government has also given a readjustment lower than inflation to the minimum, as was applied this year, when the INPC closed 2020 at 5.45% , and the minimum rose 5.26%.
