Euro interest rates come out of negative
The ECB (European Central Bank) raised interest rates in the euro zone on Thursday (21) for the first time in 11 years. The 0.50 percentage point increase took interest rates from negative -0.5% to zero.
The monetary authority also promised a further increase for the next meeting in September.
What explains: in addition to many countries in the region recording the highest inflation in decades, the market was expecting the beginning of the ECB’s monetary tightening after the Fed accelerated the pace of interest rate hikes in the US.
- This mismatch contributed to the euro reaching parity with the dollar last week, something that has not happened since 2002.
- Economists heard by the Sheet assess that the common currency may even have relief in the short term, but should continue to suffer in relation to the dollar in the face of the impacts of the war in Ukraine and an eventual global recession.
And the real? The deterioration of Brazil’s fiscal health is reflected in the rise in future interest rates and the devaluation of the exchange rate.
- This Thursday, the dollar closed the BRL 5.49, at the highest level since January 24 this year. It’s a high of 19.2% compared to the lowest price against the real, in early April.
- Local and global uncertainties should continue as factors of instability for the Brazilian currency.
More about Europe:
Putting an end to fears of a permanent interruption of Russian gas to the mainland, Moscow resumed supply of the product through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline on Thursday.
The flow, however, remains reduced, with only 40% of capacity.
Airline prices soar
Anyone who has been planning a trip or has had to buy a plane ticket in recent months must have been scared by the prices.
Not by chance: in May, the average fare for domestic flights reached BRL 682.60, up 48.5% compared to the same month last year. The price is also the highest in real terms – corrected for inflation – since December 2012, according to Anac.
What explains: the main factor is the surge in aviation kerosene (QAV), which tracks international oil prices and accounts for about a third of airline costs.
- If in December the price of a liter was BRL 3.71in July he arrived to BRL 5.63a rise of 51.8% for the period.
- The growth in passenger demand, which was repressed during the height of the pandemic, also influences the rise in air fares.
What to do? At this time of high price, planning becomes even more important, according to industry analysts.
- The ideal is to plan 40 to 60 days in advance for domestic trips, a period that expands to six months for trips abroad.
- Another tip is to access price comparison sites to check the best option for the intended destination.
Take a break: friend’s day?
Celebrated on July 20 in several countries, the Friend’s Day is usually marked by publications celebrating friendships.
But it is also common on this date to find ironies on social networks involving people who were close and now have a broken relationship.
In the competitive world of business, there are plenty of stories of people who outmaneuvered friends and family to take control of a company or carry out scams with millionaire losses. In the stream there are some examples:
- “The social network”: the film about the creation of Facebook exposes the dispute between Brazilian Eduardo Saverin, one of the company’s founders, with “former friend” Mark Zuckerberg, after the latter had removed him from the company. Available on HBO Max and Star+.
- “The Wizard of Lies”: Robert de Niro plays Bernie Madoff, creator of the biggest financial pyramid in history – the Ponzi Scheme. Madoff cheated and wiped out the savings of many people around him, including family and friends. Available on HBO Max.
