Lula suggests discussing only ‘crucial points’ instead of carrying out tax reform

by

Former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Thursday (28) to businessmen in the transport sector that tax reform is “a very complex thing”, and suggested that the country discuss “crucial points” to satisfy who produces and who consumes.

“I don’t know if we have to continue carrying out tax reform, which is a very complex thing. Maybe we’ll get to the crucial points and, point by point, we’ll be able to create a taxation model in Brazil that can satisfy all of them.” people, both to those who produce and to those who consume”, he said.

The declaration took place during the 5th CNT (National Transport Confederation) Forum of debates. He was with the vice-presidential candidate, former governor Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), and with former minister Aloizio Mercadante, coordinator of the ticket’s government program.

This Wednesday (27), in an interview with UOL, PT said that he will return to national conferences to discuss the topic and that “everyone [fica] talking about tax reform”, however “it doesn’t come out”.

On Thursday, the former president said that Brazil “has gone backwards” and that it will be necessary to do with the country as is done at gas stations: put a sign “under new direction”. Lula also stated that businessmen will have “two people in the Presidency”.

“For the first time in the history of Brazil, you have the opportunity to see two of the most beautiful experiences of administration in this country running this country. An accumulated experience of 16 years as a manager of São Paulo together with the management of a president who to live the best moment of growth and social inclusion in this country.”

Lula also declared that, at some point, it will be necessary to discuss “in this fancy meeting of entrepreneurs in the Brazilian transport system” the issue of autonomous drivers, so that they can participate “in this process of growth and enrichment on equal terms”.

Alckmin returned the praise, saying that he and Lula were “good partners” when he was in the São Paulo government and that the former president has extensive experience and leadership skills.

“During the eight years of President Lula, the country grew, on average, 4% a year in the economy. In 2010, 7.5%. [banco] Lehman Brothers. It grew 4% without inflation, practically”, said the vice candidate.

The former governor of São Paulo also highlighted a study that, according to him, places the state of São Paulo as the third place with the highest number of highways duplicated per square kilometer, behind only Germany and Spain.

On their last visit to Brasília, two weeks ago, Lula and Alckmin were at the CNC (National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism). On the occasion, PT promised the businessmen a greater consumer market and said that Alckmin will be “the real vice”.

The CNT invited the four presidential candidates who scored the best in the poll carried out by the entity: Lula, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), former minister Ciro Gomes (PDT) and senator Simone Tebet (MDB).

The entity delivered a document with proposals for the sector. One of them is to “promote adjustments in fuel price policy, providing greater predictability”. The CNT also called for permanent payroll tax relief, in addition to further privatization and concessions.
