deflation in july

The reduction of taxes on fuels and energy led Brazil to register deflation of 0.68% in July. It is the lowest rate recorded by the IPCA, with data since 1980, informed the IBGE this Tuesday (9).

The rise in food prices, with greater weight in the pockets of the poorest, continues to be a cause for concern.

In numbers: the market expected a drop of 0.65% for the month. In the 12-month period, the IPCA remains above two digits: 10.07%.

Five points to understand July deflation:

1 – What is deflation? It is the opposite of inflation, that is, a negative change in prices between two moments.

two – What pulled the IPCA down: transport groups (-4.51%) and housing (-1.05%), precisely the two directly affected by the 17% to 18% ICMS ceiling.

  • Gasoline dropped 15.48% and had the greatest single impact on the index (-1.04 point percentage). In the housing group, residential electricity had a drop of 5.78%.

3 – Food still worries: the other seven groups in the survey rose in July, with emphasis on food and drink (1.30%).

  • Inflation for this group was driven by milk and dairy products, amid the off-season and high production costs. Long life milk jumped 25.46%.
  • The item with the highest increase was watermelon (31.26%), the one with the highest drop was tomato (-23.68%). See the biggest gains and biggest drops for the month here.

4 – Arrived at who earns the most: in São Paulo, deflation reached only families with monthly income above eight minimum wages (R$ 9,696), according to the IPC FX, index of Fipe (Fundação Instituto de Pesquisas Econômicas).

5 – Diffusion: the index that measures inflation “spread” across sectors of the economy was 63% in July. Despite being the lowest since March 2021, it shows that almost two-thirds of IPCA prices have risen.

Relief for the discreet and regretful

WhatsApp started making new features available to users of the app this week: more time to delete messages and functions to hide online status, sneak out of groups and block screenshots in single-view messages.

Understand: the deadline for deleting messages is now “just over two days”greatly extending the old limit of one hour, eight minutes and 16 seconds.

  • The novelty, as well as leaving groups without notifying all users, only the administrator, are already in effect. The other two will be activated during this month.
  • The end of online status can be a relief for those who have already disabled the “last seen” function, but which is snagged by the app every time they access messages.
  • This function is the only one that needs a user action to be enabled. Here’s the step by step.

Mark Zuckerbergpresident of Meta (which owns Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram), said the company will continue to “create new ways to protect your messages and keep them as private and secure as face-to-face conversations.”

  • THE Sheet showed last year how big techs have been betting on security to win over users amid regulatory pressures and privacy scandals.

How will biometric boarding work?

Congonhas Airport, in São Paulo, and Santos Dumont Airport, in Rio de Janeiro, will be the first Brazilian terminals to definitively implement biometric facial boarding for passengers and crew.

It will be the world’s first functioning biometric airlift.

What is it for: the initiative eliminates the need to present boarding passes and traveler identification documents. It aims to speed up and make access for passengers and crew safer.

How will it work: when the passenger checks in, he/she must perform the biometric validation associated with his/her flight and accept the terms of the LGPD (General Data Protection Law) for each new flight.

  • At this beginning, to use the system, the user must have a valid biometric document (digital driver’s license or digital voter registration card). Afterwards, each company will be able to adopt its own procedures.

Facial biometrics will be used in two steps:

  • Departure lounge: totems will do the biometric reading of the face, consulting the government base, the registration and the passenger’s boarding pass.
  • Boarding gate: after one more face scan, the user will be allowed to access the aircraft.

In numbers: the technology was tested at seven airports in the country from October 2020 to January this year with more than 6,200 passengers.

  • One of the results verified was the economy of 27% at boarding time: from 7.5 seconds for 5.4 seconds per passenger.

The project belongs to the federal government and involves the ministries of Infrastructure, Economy, Serpro, a government technology company, and Anac (National Civil Aviation Agency).

Heiress waives more than R$20 billion

A 29-year-old girl gives up an inheritance of about 4 billion euros (approximately R$21 billion, at today’s exchange rate) because she doesn’t want to be too rich.

Who is it: German Marlene Engelhorn is a descendant of the founders of the company Basf, which in 2021 had revenues of 78 billion euros.

Heir Profession: the young woman does not shy away from the “rich girl” label. She is the granddaughter of Traudl Engelhorn, who is now ranked 687th on the Forbes list of the richest people in the world.

  • “I didn’t do anything to receive this legacy. This is pure luck in the birth lottery and pure coincidence,” Marlene said.

Balance: she is part of a movement formed by heirs of great fortunes that defends a greater redistribution of wealth and the increase of taxes for millionaires, the Taxmenow (“tax me now”, in English).

  • Criticisms of taxation considered regressive (which weighs proportionately more on those who earn less) are also supported by other tycoons.
