Gentiloni for exit from enhanced surveillance: Greece’s achievements are commendable

Thanks to the sacrifices and endurance of its people and the determination of the authorities, Greece’s position at the center of the European Union is secure, says the Commissioner for Economic Affairs.

Greece’s achievements are commendable, says the Commissioner for Economic Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, in a statement on the occasion of the country’s exit from the regime of enhanced supervision.

In his statement, Mr. Gentiloni notes:

“The country is exiting the regime of enhanced surveillance, after four years, having successfully completed most of the political commitments it undertook in the Eurogroup.

THE Greece has indeed implemented key reforms to strengthen its economy and public finances. Her achievements are all the more commendable given that this period was marked by two major external shocks: the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Thanks to the sacrifices and endurance of its people and the determination of the authorities, Greece’s position at the center of the European Union is secure. The Commission will continue to support Greece in the next stage of its economic development, and will work together to implement the reforms and investments set out in the ambitious recovery and resilience plan.

The end of enhanced surveillance for Greece also marks the symbolic completion of the most difficult period the eurozone has experienced. With the public debt crisis that characterized the first years of the previous decade, our Union learned to swim in the deep.

Solutions were often found at unjustifiably high costs both from a social and economic point of view.

Our strong collective response to the pandemic has shown that Europe has learned lessons from this crisis. Now, as our economies enter a turbulent period, we must show the same solidarity and unity.”
