Inflation in Brazil approaches the average of other economies
The recent relief in Brazilian inflation thanks to the drop in fuel prices has brought our price index closer to the average of the largest developed and emerging economies, according to a survey by the bank UBS BB.
In numbers: the 12-month inflation for the Brazilian consumer has been above this average since July 2020. The difference reached 5.62 percentage points in September last year. In July of this year, it had dropped to 0.92 Score.
From Villains to Heroes: energy and fuel prices in Brazil are below the average of other economies and, together with food, explain this decrease in the difference.
- These items were precisely the ones that pushed the country’s inflation above the average last year, with the increase in the electricity bill due to the water scarcity flag and the losses in the countryside with drought and frost.
Still worries: the rise in prices of industrial goods –pressed since 2020 with a lack of inputs– and services is still above average.
Opinion: sustainable growth with low inflation will only be possible with fiscal policy control and persistence in reforms, writes columnist Solange Srour.
Oil returns to January
On a closed day in Brazil because of the holiday, the sharp drop in oil prices was the main highlight abroad.
In numbers: Brent barrel prices fell 5.2%a $88 (R$ 459), renewing the lows since the end of January, before the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
What explains: The drop came after Chinese trade balance data showed the negative impact of inflation on the economy, which increased market bets on falling oil demand in a global slowdown.
On a public holiday in Brazil…US indices ended higher – S&P 500 (+1.83%), Dow Jones (+1.40%) and Nasdaq (+2.14%). The EWZ, an index quoted abroad that is referenced in Brazilian stocks, rose 0.9%.
