The digital transformation of the Greek economy and society is a gamble, the Prime Minister said – United Group’s investment plan envisages the installation of a 10 Gigabit fiber optic network that will cover 4.5 million individuals and businesses

United Group’s plan to implement investments of 2 billion euros in Greece by 2027 for the upgrade of the telecommunication infrastructure of new technology were presented to the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis by representatives of the group, during a meeting that took place in the morning at Megaros Maximos.

“I believe that your decision is proof of the confidence shown by both domestic and international investors in Greece’s prospects. And, of course, I believe that the excellent work that has been done by the Department of Digital Government as well as the funds available from the Recovery and Resilience Fund support this kind of investment.” stated at the beginning of the meeting Kyriakos Mitsotakiswhile pointing out that “2022 will be a record year in terms of attracting foreign investment to the country.”

The investment plan of the United Group provides for installation 10 Gigabi fiber optic networkt which will cover 4.5 million individuals and businesses.

“For us, the digital transformation of the Greek economy and society is a bet that we intend to, not just to win, but to give Greece the opportunity to make a real leap”, emphasized the Prime Minister. “I think that Greek citizens already recognize that things that have been done in the field of digital services are very important. And at the same time we have an extremely ambitious plan, which is partly financed by the Recovery Fund in combination with leveraging private resources: to be able to upgrade our digital infrastructure as a whole.”

“Let me once again express my satisfaction for this very important investment that you are announcing today, through Nova, in the digital upgrade of the country”, said the Prime Minister. “It will allow us to quickly bridge an important gap that we have long pointed out, but to provide very high speeds at affordable prices to millions of Greek households and of course to further stimulate competition in the market, something that we initially consider that is welcome,” he added.

“With the investment that you are announcing today as a continuation of the important work that has already been done in the company, you give us the confidence and certainty that this plan, this vision that we have, we share it with important investment funds that also want these to participate in the added value that is created as a whole in the country”, added Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

“The truth is that today we are making a very important investment, 2 billion euros, in the development of optical fibers, which – we think – will greatly promote the prospects of the country, but also much more – I would say – economic prosperity and social prosperity of our country”, said Nikos Stathopoulos, President of BC Partners in Europe.

“From the first day we came to Greece, we made it clear that our investment is not only about the here and now. What we seek is a relationship that will last a long time,” noted United Group CEO Victoriya Boklag. “We are pleased to announce that we will invest an additional 2 billion over the next five years. A large portion of this investment will go towards building Nova’s state-of-the-art fiber optic infrastructure.”

“For us, this specific investment is a vote of confidence in Greece and it is also a vote of confidence in its technological capabilities,” noted the Minister of State and Digital Governance Kyriakos Pierrakakis. “To put it schematically, we are about 25th in the world in mobile, but about 92nd in fixed. That’s exactly why your investment is coming in today to pick up a big chunk of the backlog, and it’s terribly important that we’re able to make that transition. It is another stepping stone towards the digitization of the state and economy and is another part of the strategy drawn up by the Prime Minister”, continued Kyriakos Pierrakakis.

The meeting also took part, from the side of the government, Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Yiannis Bratakos and the Head of the Economic Office of the Prime Minister Alexis Patelis. On behalf of Nova, the CEO Panagiotis Georgiopoulos participated.
