by

Costs with residential renovations, which had a boom at the beginning of the pandemic, began to weigh on the pockets of cariocas, who are interrupting the works to meet other priority expenses.

According to a survey carried out by Obramax, a network of construction materials, 70% of Rio residents had to delay the works recently, and 33% did so for a period of six months to a year. The main reason mentioned was the high cost of materials and labor.

Inflation affected the plans of 89% of respondents who intended to renovate or build. The loss of purchasing power of families aggravated the scenario. Among the 500 respondents, nearly 40% said income declined during the pandemic.

As a result, 43% gave up on reforming. Almost the same percentage decided to carry out the work anyway, focusing mainly on adjustment services, such as painting and electrical repairs, according to the survey.

To avoid further expenses, 34% decided to do the work themselves. The survey was conducted from October 27th to November 4th through the MindMiners platform, with respondents from Rio de Janeiro who built or renovated in the last 12 months or intend to do so in the next year.
