Bolsonaro uses queen’s funeral trip to campaign on gas prices

by

In London for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) followed the electoral campaign tone and released a video comparing the price of gasoline in England with Brazilian fuel.

“I’m here in London, England. The price of gasoline: 1.61 pounds. That’s approximately 9 reais and 70 cents a liter. That is, practically double the average of many Brazilian states”, he said in a video recorded that night. this Sunday (18) and published by his team on social networks.

The minimum wage in the UK this year is £9.50 an hour. Considering a 40-hour working week, a British worker earns just over R$9,175 per month. The minimum wage in Brazil in 2022 is R$1,212, almost R$8,000 less than the British one.

In the last week, the average price of gasoline in Brazil fell by another 1.4% at gas stations, breaking the R$5 barrier for the first time since July 2020, in values adjusted by the IPCA (National Consumer Price Index). According to a weekly survey by the ANP (National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels), fuel came out, on average, at R$ 4.97 per liter, in the 12th week followed by a fall. The most expensive gasoline was found in São Paulo, at R$ 6.99 per litre.

It is about 32.7%, or R$2.42, lower than the peak of R$7.39 per liter recorded at the end of June, before state and federal tax cuts approved by the National Congress.

Bolsonaro will stay in the British capital for two days. This Sunday, he paid a visit to the queen’s coffin, in Westminster Hall, alongside Pastor Silas Malafaia and attended a royal reception at Buckingham Palace.

“He treated us very well. Just condolences”, he said of his meeting with King Charles III to the press and supporters who were waiting for him in front of the residence of the Brazilian ambassador in London, Fred Arruda.

This Monday (19), the Brazilian president will participate in the funeral at Westminster Abbey, always accompanied by First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro, who has become a key part of his campaign in the race for reelection.

The drop in fuel prices is one of the trump cards of Bolsonaro’s re-election campaign, whose image was eroded by the escalation of inflation in the first half of the year. To generate positive facts, Petrobras started announcing cuts almost every week.

Bolsonaro has appeared at Brazilian gas stations and promises that the country will have one of the cheapest gasoline in the world. Last week, the country was in the 34th place of the cheapest gasoline, according to the website Global Petrol Prices. It is an advance of 15 positions in relation to the one verified a month before.
