Bolsonaro’s veto Guedes’ advisor leaves squabbles with PP

President Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) veto on the nomination of former deputy Alexandre Baldy (PP-GO) for the position of political articulator at the Ministry of Economy created conflicts with members of the PP.

Party members were angered by the breach of an agreement that was being sewn by Minister Ciro Nogueira (Casa Civil) and the Speaker of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL). The episode showed the influence that former allies of Bolsonaro still exert in the decisions of the Palácio do Planalto.

Baldy was barred by the president before the electoral scenario in Goiás. The former deputy is studying running for a seat in the Senate aligned with the ticket of the governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (DEM), which displeased the leader of the PSL in the Chamber, Major Vitor Hugo (GO) —one of the closest parliamentarians to Bolsonaro. Vitor Hugo wants to run for state government.

A wing of the PP defends that Ciro insists on the articulation to nominate Baldy for the post of political articulator of minister Paulo Guedes (Economy). But there is little chance of this going forward.

In addition to Bolsonaro’s resistance, Baldy informed allies that he prefers to focus on the electoral strategy for the 2022 Senate election.

Former Minister of Cities during the Michel Temer government, Baldy was the State Secretary for Metropolitan Transport of São Paulo until October in the João Doria (PSDB) government, which is pointed out as another factor contrary to his appointment. The toucan is a dislike of Bolsonaro.

With Baldy’s veto, there is an impasse in relation to the position of articulator of the priority agendas of the economic team in Congress.

The Economy Minister signaled to allies that the idea of ​​tampering with the ministry’s political articulation has lost strength, but the political wing still wants to advance in sewing to choose a new head of the Ministry’s Special Advisory on Institutional Relations.

PP members assess that Guedes is weakened and see an opportunity to introduce a trusted name of the legend into the Ministry of Economy, a folder usually filled by technicians, just as the 2022 Budget is being negotiated.

The economy minister even endorsed the suggestion of naming Baldy — but the plan was vetoed under the influence of pocket narists.

The president’s decision comes on the eve of a decisive week for the Ministry of Economy, which wants to conclude the vote on the PEC (proposed amendment to the Constitution) of the Precatório.

The PEC is currently the main item on the economic agenda in Congress, as it releases an increase of around R$ 106 billion next year and makes possible the promise of Bolsonaro to pay an amount of R$ 400 to the beneficiaries of Auxílio Brasil.

Despite the veto of a nomination by Ciro, the PP maintains its plan to align itself with Bolsonaro in the re-election campaign for the Palácio do Planalto, but party leaders have come to regard with reservations the power it has in government – or that it would have in a new term of Bolsonaro.
