5G arrives in Belém, Macapá, Manaus, Porto Velho and Rio Branco on the 6th

by

Belém, Macapá, Manaus, Porto Velho and Rio Branco will be able to activate 5G at 3.5 GHz from October 6th, completing the initial stage of implementing the technology in the country.

According to Moisés Moreira, counselor at Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency), the forecast is that the release will be made on that date. The activation of the antennas by the operators, however, only occurs with the approval of the agency.

The Gaispi (Group for Monitoring the Implementation of Solutions for Interference Problems), chaired by Moreira, should meet on October 4th to formalize the release of the connection in the cities.

The five capitals are added to the other 22 that received the connection in recent months. The starting point was Brasília, on the 6th of July. In São Paulo, the connection arrived on August 4th.

The goal defined by Anatel for operators is one 5G antenna for every 100,000 inhabitants. The schedule was delayed due to the lack of equipment coming from China, which decreed a lockdown because of a new wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The imported equipment are filters that avoid interference. Therefore, at first, the deadline was until the end of September for all capitals to have 5G antennas. The new deadline ends on October 28.
