Bolsonaro is not a populist, he is popular, says Guedes to businessmen

Minister Paulo Guedes (Economy) praised the political leadership of president and reelection candidate Jair Bolsonaro (PL), projected good indicators in the economy and asked businessmen not to believe in “political narratives”.

“Don’t believe political narratives that are detrimental [prejudiciais] what is happening in Brazil. Trust Brazil, bet on the country and observe the facts,” said the minister six days before the vote, citing the deflation registered in recent months and the recent revisions to Brazil’s growth projections in 2022.

The statements were made this Monday (26) at a meeting with businessmen in Salvador, at an event organized by the Bahia Business Forum, which brings together the Federation of Industries of the State of Bahia and other business entities.

The minister, who has been involved in Bolsonaro’s campaign, also said that the government had been under attack for three and a half years.

“It’s the abstention crisis of those who are not in power. After 30 years in power, a president came in who said: ‘the way is there, the way is not where you were going’. It was 30 years of economy closed, we will open”, he said.

He then defended Bolsonaro: “He’s not populist, our president is popular. There’s a huge difference.”

Guedes cited the challenges faced by the country from the Covid-19 pandemic, noting that 1 million formal jobs were lost in 60 days, and celebrated government social policies, such as Auxílio Brasil and emergency aid.

Citing the social program, Guedes highlighted the role of former Minister of Citizenship João Roma (PL), a candidate for the government of Bahia who also participated in the meeting with businessmen.

Guedes said that the country comes out of the pandemic with the ratio between debt and GDP (Gross Domestic Product) at 77%, the same level as before: “You can be proud not to push the bill to children and grandchildren. We fight, we won and we paid for the war.”

The minister also stated that Brazil will be one of the five largest economies in the world with the formation of a market economy with mass consumption and said that Bolsonaro acts with pride.

“It is written. We just have to trust ourselves. And our president has given this show of haughtiness on the one hand and performance on the other. We have performed better than those who underestimated us,” he said.
