Bolsonaro speaks again about readjusting civil servants in an election year: ‘Let it be 1%’

by

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) spoke again, this Wednesday (8), about granting readjustments for servers in an election year.

In an interview with Gazeta do Povo, Bolsonaro said that this would be done without breaking the spending ceiling – which now works with a new calculation, after a change made by the government, to make room for more spending.

“It would have [que ser reajuste de] 3%, 4%, 5%, 2%… Let it be 1%. This is the idea. Because we are completing three years in my government without readjustment. Now, the readjustment is not to restore all inflation, because we don’t have space for that,” said Bolsonaro.

The president had been asked about “statements misinterpreted by the market”, and one of the examples cited was the announcement of the possible readjustment.

In Dubai, last month, Bolsonaro promised the readjustment and, at the time, said it would be for all servers.

At the time, however, as the leaf, there was an understanding in Planalto that it would be difficult to grant salary increases for all categories at a level as low as 1%, for example.

Thus, they started to study higher levels for some categories. At the president’s request, the police could not be left out. They are part of the electoral base.

After an agreement closed the day before for the slicing of the proposal, the PEC dos Precatórios was enacted this Wednesday (8) by Congress. The text is the government’s bet to pay Auxílio Brasil of R$ 400 for 17 million families by December 2022.

The text, however, only guarantees part of the space in the budget to guarantee a BRL 62.2 billion slack next year. There are still R$ 48.6 billion that will depend on the approval of another PEC in the two Houses.

Bolsonaro now has part of these resources to pay for the civil servants’ readjustment, but the budget space is short.

In the interview this Wednesday (8), he mentioned that the governor of Rio, his ally, Claudio Castro, promised an adjustment of around 10% to the state civil service starting in February of next year – which, Bolsonaro himself pointed out, it’s election year.

“I talked to [Paulo] Guedes on the possibility of making a readjustment. What is this adjustment? I’ve seen the governor of Rio already announced 10% for the servers. Politically, it’s cool, right. There’s an election next year. The server [em] a large part deserves it. Now, on our side here, [o reajuste] would not come to that,” he said.
