Musk gives up on giving up on Twitter
Billionaire Elon Musk reversed his decision to back out of his Twitter purchase. Now, he accepts to buy the social network on the terms proposed there in April, for $44 billion (R$ 226 billion), or US$ 54.20 (R$ 278) per share.
As was to be expected, Twitter stocks reacted sharply and closed in a high 22%a $52. The company’s BDRs (stock receipts) traded on the Brazilian stock exchange rose 21% to BRL 133.62.
The network’s shareholders had already accepted the offer last month. A settlement, therefore, should avoid one of the loudest lawsuits in recent years in the business world.
- On the one hand, Twitter would be trying to force Musk to buy the platform.
- On the other, the businessman trying to prove that the platform omitted a high number of fake profiles from the negotiations.
Remember the shuttle: It all started back in April, when a regulatory document showed that the billionaire had bought 9% of the shares of Twitter. Soon after, the company invited him to take a position on the board, but the offer was turned down.
- Also in April, Musk made official his proposal to take the company private, for US$ 44 billion. At the time, he stated that this was the only way for the platform to guarantee the free flow of ideas.
- The billionaire’s biggest criticism was aimed at the network’s content moderation policies. He said he was against the permanent banning of users and even suggested the return of former US President Donald Trump to the platform.
- Another favorite target for Musk is fake accounts. In May, he suspended negotiations by claiming that the percentage cited by Twitter, that robots accounted for less than 5% of the platform’s profiles, was false.
- The withdrawal of the deal was made official by the billionaire in July. But Twitter took the dispute to court, claiming that the false accounts argument was just a smokescreen for the real intention to back out of the deal: financial.
- That’s because, throughout this roll, the sharp rise in interest rates expected in the US melted tech stocks and made Musk’s offer much more expensive.
EU forces universal charger
The European Parliament approved a law on Tuesday that obliges mobile devices sold in the bloc to adopt only one type of charger, with a USB-C port, by the end of 2024.
The measure, which had been agreed in June, will mainly affect Apple, which uses Lightning technology in the iPhone. For the rule to take effect, it still needs the approval of the bloc’s countries.
what explains: the EU (European Union) hopes that the change will generate an economy of 200 millions of euros (R$ 1 billion) per year by avoiding the purchase of new chargers by consumers.
- The new standard is also expected to reduce more than 1,000 tons of e-waste annually in the bloc’s countries. The deadline for adapting notebook chargers is until 2026.
upset: Apple was opposed to the project and previously stated that the adoption of a single charger is a brake on innovation. The USB-C type is used by Samsung and other American rivals in mobile devices.
- The apple company already uses the USB-C input on some models of its Mac computer, but on the iPhone, Lightning technology has persisted for more than ten years.
Is here? In the same way as the EU, Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency) opened a public consultation in June for the proposal to standardize USB-C chargers for cell phones.
- Suggestions were received by the end of September.
Iphone 14 comes to Brazil ‘drier’
The new iPhone 14 line that will be available in Brazil on October 14th, with pre-sales starting this Friday (7th), will come with some differences from the Apple device that has been sold in the US since the 16th. .
What changes:
– Satellite message: one of the biggest novelties of the new generation will not arrive at the launch in Brazil. It allows the sending of emergency messages via satellite in places where there is no internet or cell phone signal.
- The service, which will be available in the US and Canada in November, suggests a few emergency categories to users, such as “vehicle trouble”, “illness or injury”, “crime”, “lost or arrested” and “fire “.
- Then the system shows where to point the phone to connect to a satellite. The message is then transmitted after a few minutes to centers with Apple-trained experts able to ask for help on behalf of the user.
- The novelty is valid for the entire line of the new version of the device and can be used for free for two years.
– exclusive eSIM: iPhones are sold abroad without chip trays and allow a telephone line to be activated remotely. Compatible Apple smartphones allow you to install eight or more eSIMs and use two numbers at the same time.
few changes: without the two novelties, the differences between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 13 are even smaller. The entry-level models use the same processor, the cameras have the same resolution, and the battery has similar performance.
- The biggest leap between the new and old versions will be for the top of the line, with a new processor chip (A16 Bionic), better resolution cameras (48 MP) and better image processing.
‘Race for the Sun’ is underwhelming
The solar energy sector expected a race in the country for the installation of distributed generation systems (those of the plates on the roofs) this year. Even with a growth above 50% in just over six months, the rise came below expectations.
Why the sector projected more: a January law established that installations registered before January 7, 2023 will be exempt until 2045 from charging for access to the energy distributor’s network (which is around 28% of the conventional tariff).
- As of January 7, the charge will be staggered until it reaches the full amount (28%) in 2029. The average expected impact on the bill for charging for the use of wire is 4% each year.
Why did it disappoint? the rise in the Selic rate in the country hit the cost of financing the installation of solar panels, which is BRL 16.6 thousand The BRL 22 thousand for a residential system that replaces a monthly expense of BRL 500 with the electricity bill.
another reflection higher interest rates is the greater selectivity of the companies that finance the projects. With the highest default rate typical of this scenario, the bar for getting credit gets higher.
In numbers: from January to August, the average monthly growth, in megawatts, is 57.2% higher than the same period last year, with an accumulated power of 12.7 gigawatts.
- The projection made by the sector in January was to accumulate 25 gigawatts by December, considering all solar generation (centralized and distributed). Only in the distributed one, the expectation is to reach 17 gigawatts.
Even so, in July, solar energy became the third largest source in the national matrix, surpassing natural gas and biomass thermoelectric plants. It was only behind hydroelectric plants and wind farms.
