The share of non-alcoholic beverages in the alcoholic beverages market reached 66% during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a global study by industry consultancy IWSR.
According to the survey, the consumption of non-alcoholic beverages grew 4.5% last year, while that of beverages with low alcohol content fell 5.5%. The analysis covers ten major markets, including Brazil.
The drop in sales of low-alcohol beverages primarily reflects the drop in beer consumption in Western Europe. In addition to Brazil, the study included Germany, South Africa, Australia, Canada, Spain, United States, France, Japan and the United Kingdom.
According to the IWRS, health and well-being concerns have led many consumers to drink non-alcoholic drinks more often, alternating their consumption with stronger drinks.
As the product offer is diversifying, says the company, consumers who want to moderate their consumption of alcohol were able to do so without having to give up the taste of traditional drinks.
In some markets, however, consumers continue to perceive products with a low alcohol content as being of lower quality, especially in the case of wine, says the IWRS.
