Toyota said on Friday that it had discovered that about 296,000 customer information from its T-Connect service may have been leaked.

The automaker said 296,019 email addresses and customer numbers using T-Connect, a service that connects vehicles over a network, were potentially leaked. Affected customers are individuals who have signed up on the service’s website using their email addresses since July 2017.

A third-party access could not be confirmed from the access history of the data server where the information was stored based on investigation by security experts, Toyota said in a statement.

At the same time, he added that access “cannot be completely ruled out”.

There was no possibility, however, that users’ sensitive personal information, such as names, phone numbers or credit card information, could have been leaked, Toyota said.

The Japanese automaker has not confirmed cases of information misuse, but has warned that there is a possibility of spam, phishing scams and unsolicited email messages being sent to users.

The company said that an engineer who developed the T-Connect website accidentally uploaded parts of the source code with public settings from December 2017 until September 15 of this year.
