Lula says that you don’t need a law for fiscal responsibility, but character

Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) once again stated that he was against the spending cap and that it does not take a law to be fiscally responsible, but character.

“I was the only one who achieved a primary surplus during the entire period in which I was president of the Republic, demonstrating that responsibility does not need to have a law. Responsibility must have character,” he said.

“That’s why I’m against the spending cap. You don’t need a law to be responsible. I’m responsible because I learned in my political training that we can only spend what we earn”, he added.

The statements were made on Sunday (9) during a campaign in Belo Horizonte. The PT faces President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the second round for the Planalto.

Lula also maintained the stance of not detailing the names of his eventual economic team, if elected, justifying his decision.

“If I present a [nome] I lose ten [possibilidades de nomes]. If I present ten, I lose 50. Am I crazy to nominate one?”, he replied, when asked by a reporter. “First, I’m going to win [a eleição]”, said.

The president stated that, in case he wins the election, he intends to resume stopped works under the PAC (Growth Acceleration Program).

Lula also said that the minimum wage will receive a real increase every year, based on the growth of GDP (Gross Domestic Product), and that the internet will be taken throughout Brazil.

“[O país] will have internet in the 8.5 million square kilometers. Don’t ask me how much it will cost, because the question is how much it will cost not to do it. So we’ll do it.”
