Entrepreneurs working or looking for opportunities in the plant sector need to be aware of trends in decorating homes and events to stay up to date. Landscaping experts and business owners indicate what should be most sought after next year.
Arrangements
Sending vases and bouquets, often restricted to special dates such as Mother’s Day and birthdays, became more common with social distancing. “It was a way of sending love, as people couldn’t be close. I think this is a trend that will remain,” says Fabiana Pomposelli, from Atelier Clementtina, who works virtually in Rio (instagram.com/atelierclementtina).
For her, one of the flowers that will appear more and more frequently in the arrangements is the protea, an exotic species from Africa, which has the advantage of remaining beautiful after it dries. “If you make a protein wreath this year, you can still wear it next Christmas,” he says.
Events
Dehydrated plants are expected to stand out at parties and events in 2022. But they won’t be alone. In table settings, for example, aromatic herbs such as rosemary can be used.
For weddings, floral designer Marina Reis, from Ateliê Colorato –which works online in Rio– has two bets: the decoration with plants in drier tones, such as fendi (a kind of greenish nude), and also the combination of large foliage with white flowers.
“The green that came into our lives has been taken to weddings. And the most classic brides, who do not give up white, end up including color as well, especially in flower arrangements”, says Marina.
At home
Green foliage continues to dominate the preference of those who want to decorate environments with plants. And, the more resistant the species and the less maintenance it requires, the more the plant should be sought after. Currently, the preference has been for native plants, but some exotic plants are becoming popular — such as Ficus lyrata and Ficus elastica.
“Planted in gardens, they take up a lot of space, but potted look great and can be used in a composition with medium and small plants”, teaches landscaper and interior designer Fabiana Ferré.
For landscaper Jonathas Matarelli, the bet is on tropical species. “They are resistant and allow us to create gardens that last a long time in our climate.” Some examples are the Adam’s rib, the guaimbés and the philodendrons — a huge and varied family, which includes native and exotic plants, but always resistant and easy to maintain.
“[Essas espécies] they adapt easily and can be tied to trees, used in flower beds or pots. And they look great as pendants too,” says the landscaper.
Supports
Wall brackets continue to be a big trend for 2022. And here comes all types: from the simplest, used to hang ferns, to the most modern models in metal or macramé.
Pedestals that help create different heights for the vases are also in vogue. “You can mix different styles of supports and scarves”, says the architect Julia Rettmann, who since 2015 maintains the Selvvva store, in Lapa, west of São Paulo.
Another trend that is already seen on social networks and should spread over the next year is the use of transparent glasses and pots to expose seedlings and their roots, which grow tangled up in the water.
“It’s a simple thing to do, it doesn’t need a lot of maintenance and it looks beautiful,” says Jonathas Matarelli. According to him, the pieces can be used to create a vertical garden.
fashion plants
Adam’s rib: Easy to maintain, it should be grown in a pot with a substrate rich in organic matter and in places with good light.
Orchid beehive: It resembles the golden shower. Its flowers only appear during the summer and, like other orchids, it needs sunlight to bloom.
Zamioculca: As it does not like direct sun, it grows well in apartments and requires two to three waterings a week.
Asplenium: Called the new fern, it is a delicate plant that needs indirect light. Your soil should be rich in organic matter and irrigation should take place two to three times a week.
Calatheas: With colorful foliage, it needs to be left in shaded and half-shade environments. Be careful with watering to avoid waterlogged soil.
Protea king: Super-resistant, they are sold in rods for arrangements and last up to two weeks.
