Opinion – Eduardo Sodré: Shell launches a new generation of V-Power gasoline additive in November

by

Shell modified the formula for V-Power gasoline, which received a new package of additives. The changes follow the global product cycle, which is offered in 60 countries. In Brazil, the start of distribution is scheduled for November 1st.

Gilberto Pose, a fuel specialist at Raízen (licensee of the Shell brand), says that changes occur, on average, every five years. This calendar follows the agenda of regulatory bodies in the US and Europe.

According to Pose, the price difference between regular gasoline and V-Power will be maintained, and the new additive should not generate price fluctuations beyond what is already happening in the market.

The strategy is similar to that adopted by Vibra Energia in February, when the updated versions of Petrobras’ Grid and Podium gasolines were launched.

In common, competing companies say that the cleaning power of their additive fuels removes practically 100% of the dirt that can accumulate in the engine.

The concern with the formation of crusts in engines is mainly due to electronic systems for managing emissions – which, in many cases, are associated with direct injection of gasoline and turbocharging.

The aging of the fleet caused by the difficulty in acquiring zero-kilometer cars is also pointed out as a concern in the development of new additives. Shell aims to convince consumers that its fuel can reduce engine wear over the life of the car.

The company claims that the average age of the national car fleet is the highest since 1995: 10 years and 3 months. The data is part of a recent survey carried out by Sindipeças.

Shell is also preparing developments in diesel and ethanol offered at service stations. These changes will be announced gradually between the end of this year and the first half of 2023.
