The new infrastructure for loading tankers that will transport the fuel to the points of use was inaugurated on the islet of Revythoussa where the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) warehouses of DESFA are located.
Urban areas and industries that are far from natural gas transmission networks gain access to this particular fuel with the new possibility of transporting it in liquefied form by tankers. Today it was inaugurated on the islet of Revythoussa where the warehouses are located Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) of DESFA, the new tanker loading infrastructure that will transport the fuel to the points of use.
At the same time, as pointed out today, interest in gas supply through Revythoussa has been expressed among other countries in the region and Ukraine.
The first customers as mentioned during the opening ceremony will be the Fthiotida paper mill and Kolios dairy in Kilkis where LNG storage and gasification facilities are already being built, while Western Macedonia will follow until the end of 2023 until the region’s supply pipeline is completed. Potentially, LNG cargoes could also be destined for export to neighboring countries.
Its CEO DESFA, Maria Rita Gali, reported that by September 60 LNG cargoes had arrived at Revythoussa, an all-time record size, representing more than 40% of total imports while also serving demand from neighboring countries. In the next two weeks, he added, the tanks of the new floating reservoir (FSU) in Revythoussa will be filled as a precaution in order to meet the needs of the country.
As mentioned at the event, the domestic consumption of natural gas on an annual basis decreased by 15%, however the use of Revythoussa’s facilities is increased to meet the needs of neighboring countries. Bulgaria (which is already supplied), Romania, Moldova and Ukraine have so far expressed interest in supplying natural gas through Revythoussa.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Yannis Plakiotakis stated that the investment will cover future needs of shipping and the islands while giving the possibility to use natural gas in new applications. “Our country, he emphasized, is in a much better place than other countries in terms of energy security. And the role of Greece in the transport and storage of LNG is a leading one as thanks to the foresight of shipping, Greek shipping controls 25% of the fleet of LNG carriers “.
The Deputy Minister of Development and Investments Yannis Tsakiris he talked about a project which, while relatively small (investment of 7.5 million euros), is crucial for the LNG logistics chain. The representative of the European Commission (DG Regio) Carsten Rasmussen congratulated Greece for the energy security strategy it implemented many years ago while pointing out the role of our country as a key supplier of energy for the wider region through Revythoussa and the new LNG infrastructures being built .
