Kyiv is planning an “unprecedented” holiday

Earlier today, the private Ukrainian company DTEK announced that “unprecedented” power outages are planned for the next few days in Kyiv and its province due to the significant damage caused to the energy system in Ukraine by the recent Russian strikes.

“Unfortunately, more serious and longer interruptions will take place in the coming days“, the regional department of Ukraine’s largest utility company announced on Facebook.

“The country’s energy system has suffered new damage,” DTEK said, estimating “a shortage of up to 30% of consumption for Kyiv.”

For more than two weeksRussia has stepped up strikes on energy infrastructure across Ukraine, destroying at least a third of its capacity in that province, with winter just around the corner.

As a result, and to avoid congesting the entire distribution network, power outages lasting a few hours are imposed daily in many areas, especially in the capital Kyiv, for several days.

After the Russian bombings that took place overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, the planned holiday in Kyiv and its province will last “five to six hours” instead of the four hours previously planned, the executive added. director of the DTEK group, Dmytro Sakharuk, according to the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

A new electricity holiday schedule will be unveiled in the coming days, Sakharuk said. “I warn that it will be unpleasant because the hours that someone will have to be without electricity must increase. Unfortunately, there is no other solution until the infrastructure is repaired.”

For his part, the governor of Kyiv province, Oleksii Kuleba, on Thursday called on the local population to prepare for “emergency power outages for an unspecified period of time” and “to consume electricity in moderation.”

“The situation remains tense and unfortunately it is too early to talk about stabilizing the system,” he said today on Telegram.
