Director says PRF made biggest operation in history amid leniency accusations

Amid accusations that the Federal Highway Police acted with leniency in relation to the undemocratic acts that blocked public roads across the country, the director of the corporation, Silvinei Vasques, said in a video released on social networks on Friday night ( 4) that the operation to unlock the highways is the biggest operation in the history of the police.

In the video, Vasques says that the PRF is a state institution and that it needs to guarantee “the right to come and go for every citizen”.

The acts were promoted by bolsonaristas who do not accept the defeat of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in the elections held last Sunday (30). At first, Bolsonaro remained silent. He later posted a video in which he praised supporters but asked them to unblock the highways.

According to the director of the PRF, all administrative operations of the agency are suspended to release the staff for actions on the highways.

The latest PRF report, published this Friday night, says that there were only five partial road blocks in the country, two in Mato Grosso and three in Pará. The corporation claims that there were a total of 975 demonstrations undone.

On election day, Vasques released a video on his personal Instagram profile supporting Bolsonaro. Shortly after, he deleted the post.

The PRF organized, on Sunday (30) in which there was a second round, an operation in various parts of Brazil with the justification of inspecting illegal transport, which was questioned in court for possibly preventing people from voting. The TSE (Superior Electoral Court) determined the suspension of the operation.

Vasques mentioned Sunday’s operation in the video. “Our male and female federal police officers who have been on the road working since Sunday night were wrapping up an operation and we’ve already started this major operation to unblock highways across the country,” he said.

Deputy Attorneys of the Republic in charge of external control of police activity asked for the opening of an investigation in the Federal Police to investigate the performance of the director general of the PRF. The investigation should focus on Vasques’ actions in the elections and in the repression of road blocks.

Also this Friday, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), ordered the Federal Highway Police to report within 48 hours the number of police officers on the roads since October 28, the day before the second round of elections.

The information must be presented by state and contain data on possible recruitments carried out for voting day, Sunday (30), “there must be details of the origin of the police officers, as well as where they were sent on mission”, according to Moraes.
