Panel SA: Inflation slows sales growth in bars and restaurants, says study

by

Bars and restaurants registered a 13% increase in the average amount spent by their customers in October, compared to the same month last year, according to a survey by the Foodservice Brazil Institute, which represents large companies in the sector. The average value jumped from R$31.50 to R$35.60.

The rise in prices had an impact on sales of establishments. The relaxation of restrictions for the reopening of the sector led to significant increases in the first half of the year, but the pace of sales growth dropped in the following months and stabilized, due to inflation.

In comparison with 2020, the sector’s sales reached their peak in May, when they registered a real increase of 66%, discounted for the variation in inflation. In October, sales growth was 13%.

According to Ingrid Devisate, executive director of the IFB, consumers spend more at night and on weekends and when they go to establishments instead of asking for food to be delivered at home.
