Whites earn about 70% more than blacks and browns per hour of work

In 2021, whites received an average of R$ 19 per hour of work in Brazil, a value that exceeded the income of blacks by about 74% (R$ 10.90) and by 68% the amount of pardos (R$ 11, 30).

The data are part of a study released this Friday (11) by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

This is the second edition of the Social Inequalities by Color or Race in Brazil survey, which analyzes existing disparities in areas such as the job market, housing and education.

In the case of hourly income, the indicator used is the average income from the main job of employed persons. Data are adjusted for inflation.

According to the IBGE, inequalities are also noticeable at different levels of education.

Among workers with higher education or more, the average hourly earnings of whites (R$34.40) was around 50% higher than that of blacks (R$22.90) and around 40% higher than that of blacks (R$22.90). of browns (R$ 24.80).

“It was observed that the higher the level of education, the higher the income, being significant for those who have completed higher education. However, disparities in income from work, from the perspective of color or race, are present in all levels of instruction”, pointed out the institute.

The results were calculated from statistics from the 2021 Continuous National Household Sample Survey, also produced by the IBGE.

In monthly terms, the average income of white workers was estimated at BRL 3,099 in 2021. The brand also showed a slack in comparison with the other groups.

It exceeded the monthly income of blacks by about 75% (R$1,764) and by 70% that of pardos (R$1,814).

The differences go further. More than half of the country’s workers in 2021 (53.8%) were black and brown, but the two groups, together, occupied only 29.5% of managerial positions in the labor market, says the IBGE. Whites filled 69% of these posts.

Differences are also visible in the unemployment data. In 2021, the unemployment rate was 11.3% for the white population, 16.5% for the black population and 16.2% for the brown population.

The study also points out that, last year, the percentage of poor people in the country was 18.6% among whites and practically double among blacks (34.5%) and browns (38.4%). The poverty line considered was the one recommended by the World Bank – US$ 5.50 per day.

Whites also have more access to computers, cars and other items.

The IBGE also released this Friday a clipping from the POF (Research of Family Budgets), another survey by the institute whose data analyzed are from 2017 and 2018.

At the time, from a list of 10 durable goods, 9 were more present in the daily life of the white population.

The computer, for example, was part of the routine of 54.7% of whites. This percentage was 38.9% among blacks and 35% among browns.

The automobile is another example of the disparity. The presence of this good was 61.6% among whites, well above the rates observed among the black (34.7%) and mixed race (37.4%) populations.

Motorcycles were the only one of the 10 products that had a greater presence in the routine of blacks (22.8%) and browns (28.2%) than in whites (22.6%). The vehicle, recalled the IBGE, works as a cheaper option compared to cars.
