Karagiannis: The Greek construction, best ambassadors in the new infrastructure environment

by

The big plan of projects worth 13 billion euros, of which almost 25% has already been contracted, said the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. George Karagiannis, in his speech at the conference of the Greek-French Commercial and Industrial sustainable infrastructure and transport.

Mr. Karagiannis stressed that the projects that have been launched, serve the national planning and solve serious problems of the local communities, while they make the daily life of the citizens better.

He stressed that these projects create new jobs, while giving a significant impetus to growth, due to their large multiplier.

“Every euro that is invested, generates other euros that are invested in turn. “So we have a diffusion of investment and, ultimately, growth of the economy”, he stated characteristically.

He made special reference to the importance of “our country coming out of the economic strait with our businesses alive, stronger and more extroverted, so that employment can increase and we can attract our young people who have gone abroad again.”

Describing the goal of the Ministry of Infrastructure, he stressed that it is “important now to build the foundations with a view to the future. It is time to build for the next generations. Let our actions reflect seriousness and stability. Consistency and a reformist disposition to change what held us back. The country needs to change page. To move. We are optimistic after years that with what we do we will succeed. This is the job entrusted to us by the Greek people and this is what we will complete. “

The government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis is proceeding with reforms that change the image of the country

The Undersecretary of Infrastructure also stressed that after a long economic crisis and in the midst of – still – the pandemic, the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, implements policies and reforms that change the image of the country abroad and its own economic prospects.

“We invest in areas where our strategic position creates prospects for economic value added and remains untapped. So that Greece can finally utilize its comparative advantages and play a leading role “.

Good cooperation of the Ministry with the Private Sector

In the discussion that followed, Mr. Karagiannis likened the cooperation between the public and the private sector to tango, emphasizing that both sides should evolve and respond to the new environment.

Especially for the private sector, he stressed that the political leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport does not demonize him, takes good ideas and utilizes them.

“The changes are great and we must all respond together at the fastest pace,” he said.

He stressed that “companies, the private sector should adapt and complete projects quickly according to schedules. “Improve procedures, increase wages and bring in new employees.”

He appeared convinced that Greek manufacturers can be the best ambassadors of the country and that the new environment that is being formed can push Greece forward.

Ports and railway projects worth 4 billion

Then Mr. Karagiannis spoke about the ports that need to be converted into receptors and accelerators of growth, as well as the combined transport network should be upgraded.

“New tenders for the largest package of railway projects the country has seen in decades are already on the air. A € 4 billion package of projects connecting the ports of Patras, Lavrio, Rafina, Thessaloniki, Kavala and Alexandroupolis by train and strengthening the cross-border rail link with the rest of south-eastern Europe, which is also very important for country, but also Europe “.

Then Mr. Karagiannis referred to the important project in Thriasio that “came off” after years of inactivity as well as the total of 20 new PPP projects with a budget of almost 4 billion euros which are being launched throughout the country.

Also, as public works, as he underlined, the connection of Kymi Avenue with PATHE, Bralos – Amfissa and the eastern part of VOAK, Neapoli – Agios Nikolaos, with a total budget of 1 billion, will be auctioned in the next period.

“Greece is becoming an infrastructure hub of the wider region through the implementation of a comprehensive plan of projects totaling 13 billion,” said the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, noting the fact that 25% of them have already been contracted.

The first Road Works through PPPs

At the same time, as he said, by the end of the year we are expected to have binding offers for all three new PPP road projects, Flyover of Thessaloniki, Kalamata – Rizomylos – Pylos – Methoni and Hersonissos – Neapoli of BOAK.

“These are projects of great added value that substantially upgrade the infrastructure in the areas where we intervene”, noted Mr. Karagiannis.
