Ministry of Mines and Energy agrees with transition to suspend strategic measures of the portfolio

by

The transition team of president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) obtained a guarantee from the Minister of Mines and Energy, Adolfo Sachsida, that all “strategic processes” within the portfolio will be suspended in the last two months of the current administration.

Among the measures that will be suspended are the process of opening the low voltage electricity market, which includes homes, and support for the processing of congressional projects.

The transition team also wants to suspend all procedures in the oil and gas sphere, which are in Petrobras’ list of responsibilities, including privatizations, such as the Bolivia-Brazil gas pipeline. THE Sheet found that Sachsida was willing to mediate a meeting, but made it clear to members of the technical group that he cannot interfere in a publicly traded company.

On the morning of this Tuesday (22), the shares of the state-owned company are falling 4%, the main negative influence of the Stock Exchange.

The technical group of Mines and Energy held a meeting this Tuesday morning (21) as the portfolio’s transition group to discuss the terms of the transition.

🇧🇷[O ministro] informed us that it took the decision to suspend or suspend any structural and strategic decision of the Ministry [de Minas e Energia] until the change of government”, said Senator Jean Paul Prates (PT-RN), one of the WG coordinators, after the meeting.

“We also mentioned in this regard, if within that, the decisions that Petrobras is taking in relation to some asset sales that are ongoing at the moment would be included, we request this measure so that the minister extends this to Petrobras, we will have a dialogue with Petrobras specifically”, he added.

Issues relating to Petrobras, however, still need to be discussed with the state-owned company’s board of directors, since they are not within the decision-making scope of the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

According to Mauricio Tolmasquim, executive coordinator of the Mines and Energy working group, Sachsida was “very cooperative” and made the ministry available to respond to requests from the transition team.

“What the minister said is that he will not take new measures for the ministry during this period until the new government takes office. His view, which I think is correct, is that it is up to the next government to take the structural measures it deems necessary,” he said.

This Friday’s meeting marks the beginning of contact with the current government, which will provide information so that the working group can make a diagnosis of the current situation in the area and map out emergency actions. According to Tolmasquim, the team may eventually suggest some policies for the first hundred days of government.

The team must submit a preliminary report on the 30th, while the final document is scheduled for December 11th. Faced with the tight schedule, the group’s coordinator said that the team is trying to streamline processes.
