Panel SA: Planning should stay with liberals

by

The internal dispute in the PT is leading the president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to leave the command of the Treasury with a nominee from the party. The most quoted name at the moment is that of Fernando Haddad, who, according to aides, is increasingly in Lula’s favor.

To compensate, the Ministry of Planning would take a liberal. Pérsio Arida is one of the names considered, but there are others in the pipeline, some are finance secretaries in the states.

The idea, however, has been pointed out as a high risk for Lula. This is because, in the coming years, it will be up to Planning to organize the entry and exit of public resources, providing for spending cuts due to the fiscal squeeze inherited from Jair Bolsonaro.
