The elected president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), chose the elected federal deputy Luiz Marinho (PT-SP) to lead the Ministry of Labor. According to PT members, Lula has already invited the ally, who accepted the proposal.
An announcement should be formalized in the coming days.
In a meeting last week, Lula recommended that Marinho make his name viable with the union centrals. A short time later, the three main ones —CUT, Força Sindical and UGT— endorsed the PT’s name.
The Ministry of Labor was extinguished by Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the first act of his government, in 2019. In 2021, the portfolio was recreated to accommodate Onyx Lorenzoni (PL-RS).
Marinho is president of the PT state directory in São Paulo, a close ally of Lula and headed the portfolio from 2005 to 2007.
Marinho’s choice represents a victory for PT and trade unionists over the PCdoB, which sought the ministry alongside Lula. The party had expressed interest in three ministries: Science and Technology, Culture and Labor.
On Tuesday (13), singer Margareth Menezes was announced as head of Culture. Science and Technology, on the other hand, would be destined for the PSB.
Without Work, the PCdoB will not have any of its demands met.
Marinho’s choice also shows the strength of the trade union centrals, in a recognition by the elected president of the role they played in the campaign.
This does not indicate, however, the return of the union tax, since both Lula and the unions have already positioned themselves against the measure.
The mandatory contribution, one of the main sources of income for unions, was replaced in the labor reform by a payment that depends on the authorization of the professional.
But the centrals want the contributions approved in the assembly to apply to all workers in the category, without the employee being able to individually refuse to collaborate. Under the proposal, if they refuse, they would run the risk of not receiving the benefits obtained in a collective agreement between the union and the employer.
