BC president rules out new mandate during Lula’s government

by

The president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, ruled out this Thursday (15) a possible stay in office after ending his mandate at the head of the monetary authority. According to him, the topic was not discussed between him and the future Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad.

“I have been saying this for a long time. I think that one mandate is enough to do what needs to be done. The BC is not […] and it shouldn’t be something of a mandate, it’s a work that has continuity”, said Campos Neto in an interview.

The statements are given after signs that the president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) would be willing to offer Campos Neto, appointed during the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government, another term at the head of the BC.

The current president discarded the scenario and, behind the scenes, interlocutors add that it would not be appropriate to remain at the head of the institution considering the political scenario of a new president of the Republic.

“From the beginning, I said that I didn’t think the reappointment was good. I even said in an interview that when there was the autonomy law, I was against the reappointment. I think it’s important to have the complete separation of the BC president’s cycle from the political cycle” , stated Campos Neto.

“We don’t discuss [ele e Haddad] that, but I intend to stay until the end of my mandate”, he said.

Campos Neto also said that he intends to participate in the discussions on new directors of the monetary authority. The next ones to reach the end of their mandate, in 2023, are Bruno Serra and Paulo Souza.

“All names of directors, I discussed [com a classe política]🇧🇷 So it’s a process that everyone discusses, and I hope that is taken into account,” he said.
