Closed meeting on the gas cap: Greece, Belgium, Italy, Poland do not accept a decision by qualified majority

A closed meeting of the four countries that are taking the lead in imposing a realistic ceiling on natural gas markets by the EU was organized last night, according to sources of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, at the initiative of the Minister of Environment and Energy Kostas Skrekas.

The energy ministers of Greece, Belgium, Italy and Poland participated in the meeting and the subject of the meeting was the position they will take at today’s Council of Energy Ministers of the EU.

During the meeting, according to information, everyone’s belief was confirmed that the price correction mechanism will work smoothly because all member states will work in this direction. The “4” also agreed that safety valves will not prevent the implementation of the mechanism.

There was a wide discussion on the concerns of some Member States regarding the process of suspending the mechanism and it was decided at today’s Summit that these will be discussed and the outcome of the discussion incorporated into the final, compromise decision.

The energy ministers of the 4 member states do not accept a decision by a qualified majority and have agreed to insist until the end for the existence of a compromise decision in which they will all agree and commit themselves to follow, as it will satisfy the needs of all states – members in the subject.

Finally, if the implementation of what was decided today reveals problems, the energy ministers can at a later stage take corrective actions.

Earlier, Commissioner Kadri Simmons said a European Union deal to cap the price of gas was on the way very close.

“I firmly believe that the deal is within reach. Of course it requires one very strong spirit of compromise by everyone,” said Commissioner Kadri Simpson.
