Government will nominate Carlos Baigorri for presidency at Anatel

The Minister of Communications, Fabio Faria, said this Thursday (4), during the 5G auction, that the federal government will nominate the name of Carlos Baigorri, current advisor at Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency), for the presidency of autarchy.

After participating in the entire development of the 5G edict, President Leonardo Euler de Morais leaves office on Thursday.

Baigorri has yet to be scrutinized by the Senate Infrastructure Committee. If approved, he takes over the agency from October this year to November 2024.

The board member has been an Anatel employee since 2009, where he has already assumed superintendence positions. With experience in the telecommunications area since 2006, he is an economist from UnB (University of Brasília) and a doctorate in economics from UCB (Catholic University of Brasília).

As of Wednesday night (3), there was no confirmation that his name would be nominated. Euler had sent the councilors a memorandum officiating that he would step down. Takes on as interim Raphael Garcia, Anatel’s management superintendent.

The auction of 5G frequencies takes place this Thursday and may be extended to other days. Fifteen companies formalized the bidding for lots in the 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz, 2.3 GHz and 26 GHz bands. The value of the tender, considered the largest in terms of spectrum in Latin America, is around R$ 50 billion .

The largest mobile phone operators in the country, Claro, Vivo and Tim, have already won the main ranges. The event confirmed the expectation that large operators would get the 3.5 GHz frequencies, the so-called “filet mignon” of 5G.

The value of the 183 lots in the auction will not be destined to the Federal Government. Non-collective, the auction requires that winners invest in the massification of 4G, for example, and in the construction of a private network for the government.
