In a year of inflation and limited income, Brazilians do the math for Christmas dinner. More than 60% of respondents interviewed by a survey by the Gelt cashback platform intend to spend between R$150 and R$250.
Just over 21% should invest between R$250 and R$350, with a preference for chester or pork shank — proteins that were common at the time and that were less impacted by inflation compared to red meat, for example.
Half of the 5,700 consumers interviewed would like to include cod in their supper, but will forego this year because of the price.
Inflation has also limited the purchasing power of Brazilians in trade. Shopkeepers expect sales to approach those recorded before the pandemic, but with the high prices, consumers have been spending less and prioritizing the purchase of toys for children.
