E-commerce giant Amazon announced Wednesday that it will lay off “just over 18,000” workers, cutting jobs in Europe as well.
In a message posted on the group’s website, Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy said Amazon, which had already announced in November that layoffs would reach 10,000, had revised its estimate upward and predicted “the elimination of a little more than 18,000” jobs.
E-commerce departments and staff departments will be primarily affected. The number of layoffs represents roughly 6% of the company’s workforce (≈300,000) and marks a sharp change of course for the company, which had recently doubled the salary cap it offered to attract more talent.
Mr. Jassi explained that the designs proved to be “more difficult” than anticipated because of the “uncertainty” about the course of the American economy and also because the company “has been hiring rapidly in recent years.”
If warehouse workers are added to its workforce, Amazon employs more than 1.5 million workers in the US, making it the second-largest employer nationwide, behind only supermarket chain Walmart. It expects its turnover and profits to slow due to inflation, while its share price has halved in the past year.
Amazon’s layoffs now far exceed the 11,000 announced by Meta (Facebook, Instagram) and those announced by several tech companies.
