Maria Rita Serrano was officially appointed as the new president of Caixa Econômica Federal. The confirmation came in an extra edition of the DOU (Official Gazette) this Monday (9), which also brought Daniella Marques’s dismissal from office.

The choice for Serrano was announced on December 30, 2022 by the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT), on behalf of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

Serrano is the fourth woman to chair Caixa. Before her, the position was occupied by Miriam Belchior (Executive Secretary of the Civil House), Maria Fernanda Coelho (Executive Secretary of the General Secretariat of the Presidency) and her predecessor, Daniella Marques.

The new president has been a Caixa employee for 33 years and has held various positions at the institution. She serves as an employee representative on the board of directors, to which she was first elected in 2017.

In the last election for the council, in 2022, Serrano was re-elected in the first round for the third term, with 91% of the valid votes, competing with more than 30 candidates.

Born in Santo André (SP), she graduated in social studies and history, with a master’s degree in administration from the University of São Caetano do Sul.

After her nomination, in December, the person chosen to head Caixa said, in a note, that the new management will have the challenges of reorganizing the bank to carry out social programs, such as Bolsa Família and Minha Casa, Minha Vida.

Serrano also spoke about the humanization of work relations and the establishment of partnerships with states and municipalities for the development of infrastructure projects. “It is necessary to promote the banking inclusion of the population and advance in technology to offer better customer service”, he added.
