Mônica Bergamo: Iran wants to buy 40 Embraer planes in the Lula government

by

Iran wants to resume negotiations with Embraer for the purchase of 40 aircraft from the Brazilian manufacturer. The country’s ambassador, Hossein Garibi, has already requested an audience with the vice president and minister of Industry and Commerce, Geraldo Alckmin, to discuss bilateral relations with Brazil.

RIGHT AGENDA

The contract for the purchase of the jets was negotiated in 2016, and an aircraft was even taken to Iran for testing. With the arrival of Donald Trump to power the following year, however, the US broke the nuclear agreement and returned to apply economic sanctions against the Iranians.

CUT

Afraid of US retaliation, Embraer suspended negotiations for the sale of the aircraft.

BACK

Iran’s diplomats now believe that relations with the country, under Lula’s government, can be increased – even though the sanctions, maintained by US President Joe Biden, make it difficult to reach understandings with Brazilian companies.

TIMELINE

Lula has long and cordial relations with Iran. When he was in his second term as president, the PT reached an agreement with the country on the nuclear issue, which was later boycotted by the US.

IN THE FIELD

With the retraction of negotiations with the industry because of the sanctions, trade between the Iranians and Brazil ended up guided mainly by agribusiness.

FIELD 2

Brazil imports around US$ 1 billion per year from Iran —90% of the total is invested in the acquisition of fertilizers. And it exports around US$ 5 billion in products such as soy and corn.
