The Lula government decided to calibrate the dispute with the president of the Central Bank (BC), Roberto Campos Neto, already over the weekend, when the president escalated his criticism of the institution’s leader.

Even agreeing with the president and putting pressure on Campos behind the scenes —ministers even avoided direct contact with him, asking that assistants attend him to talk—, the conclusion was that the cost of continuing in arm wrestling with him would be high for the government .

On Tuesday (7), the minutes of the Central Bank that explained the maintenance of interest rates at 13.75% mentioned the intentions of the economic team to zero the public deficit.

The Central Bank document brought a positive assessment of the package presented by the economic team of the Lula government on January 12th.

The monetary authority stated that, although it only works in its scenarios with policies already implemented, the execution of the package that promises a fiscal improvement of R$ 242.7 billion could reduce the pressure on inflation.

Minister Fernando Haddad (Finance) also tried to raise the white flag, stating that the minutes had been “a little more friendly in relation to the next steps that need to be taken”.
