The kinship between one of the directors of Anvisa and the new president of PróGenéricos, which represents manufacturers of generics such as EMS, Hypera and Cimed, reverberated in the body this weekend.
Univisa (association of Anvisa employees) released a statement criticizing the relationship between Daniel Meirelles Pereira, responsible for the 5th Board of Anvisa, and his brother Thiago Meirelles, who took charge of PróGenéricos at the beginning of the year, which has been causing discomfort in the sector.
In the document, Univisa states that Daniel’s performance will be under scrutiny, as well as his advisers and subordinates.
“The choice of the new president of PróGenéricos, in addition to making it impossible for a director of Anvisa to regulate medicines, by casting spotlights on his brother’s role, generating suspicions of a conflict of interest in all the Agency’s decisions involving medicines , is still surprising for the damage it can cause to the generics policy itself and, therefore, to the population’s access to medicines”, say the servers in the document.
Univisa also says that even if there is a possible replacement of Thiago Meirelles at PróGenéricos, his brother’s acts on the board of Anvisa will receive attention within the body.
“Decisions at Anvisa are, even if ultimately, collegiate and the director Daniel Meirelles cannot get involved in a question related to medicines, including those that do not fit into the category of generics and that compete with them, under penalty of configuration conflict of interest”, says Univisa in the text.
Daniel Meirelles Pereira is responsible for the 5th Board of Anvisa. The area covers management of pharmacovigilance, monitoring of products subject to sanitary surveillance, as well as ports and airports.
When approached on the subject in recent weeks, both Pró-Genéricos and Anvisa have cited respect for federal legislation dealing with conflict of interest. “All the limits imposed by law have been and will be observed within the scope of the director Daniel Pereira’s activities in relation to Anvisa”, says the agency in a note.
