Panel SA: Disney is about to lose Winnie the Pooh rights

by

Disney is in danger of losing control of some of its most beloved characters, who are slated to enter the public domain this year.

The Winnie the Pooh story was released in 1926 and, under US law, copyright expires 95 years after first publication. The company will retain the rights to characters created later, such as Tigger, who appeared in 1928.

The characters were based on producer Alan Alexander Milne’s son, Christopher Robin, and his stuffed animals, including Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, Piglet, Kanga and Roo.
