Travel traffic via airports increased by 70.1% compared to January 2022 and that via road border posts by 144.1%.
Receipts from tourism showed a 72% increase in January, compared to the corresponding month of 2022, reaching 224.2 million euros, compared to 130.5 million euros.
According to data from the Bank of Greece, this development reflects the increase in incoming tourist traffic by 86.1% compared to the corresponding month of 2022.
In particular, travel traffic through airports increased by 70.1% compared to January 2022 and that through road border stations by 144.1%.
The increase in inbound travel came from both the rise in travel from EU-27 countries by 48.9% and from non-EU-27 countries by 137.2%. In more detail, the travel traffic from the countries of the euro zone amounted to 210.2 thousand travelers, increased by 40.6%. Travel traffic from the EU-27 countries outside the euro area also showed an increase of 75.0%, which amounted to 84,000 travelers.
In more detail, travel traffic from Germany increased by 19.2% and reached 64.6 thousand travelers, while that from France increased by 98.9% to 31.5 thousand travelers. In relation to countries outside the EU-27, travel traffic from the United Kingdom increased by 78.2% to 59.5 thousand travelers and that from the USA by 40.8% to 15.2 thousand travelers.
Regarding receipts, the increase in receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries was a result of the increase in receipts from residents of the euro zone countries by 31.3% (January 2023: 80.7 million euros, January 2022: 61.5 million euros), as receipts from residents of EU-27 countries outside the euro area fell by 6.9% to 14.3 million euros.
In terms of the most important countries of origin for travelers from the euro area, receipts from Germany increased by 13.3% to €22.3 million, and those from France by 168.4% to €12.1 million . euro. From countries outside the EU-27, receipts from the United Kingdom rose by 48.3% to €20.2 million, while receipts from the USA increased by 10.4% to €8 ,1 million euros. Collections from Russia fell by 67.5% and amounted to 0.4 million euros.
Finally, as regards the most important countries of origin of travelers from the euro area, receipts from Germany increased by 13.3% to 22.3 million euros, as well as those from France by 168.4% in 12, 1 million euros. From countries outside the EU-27, receipts from the United Kingdom rose by 48.3% to €20.2 million, while receipts from the USA increased by 10.4% to €8 ,1 million euros. Collections from Russia fell by 67.5% and amounted to 0.4 million euros.
