Uber announced this Thursday (6) that after March 7 it will no longer deliver meals from restaurants through Uber Eats in Brazil. Orders for items from convenience stores and pet markets can still be placed.
“Our main goal going forward will be to provide access to the largest and best selection of supermarkets, specialty stores, pet shops, florists, liquor stores and other items on the Uber Eats app,” the company said in a statement.
The announcement came a day after President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) sanctioned a bill that obliges app companies to hire insurance for their delivery workers for accidents during working hours.
The company did not mention the project sanction in the statement regarding the decision to close the restaurant delivery service.
“Our products continue to be available in the same way as before in three main apps: Uber, Uber Eats and Cornershop by Uber,” the company said.
Uber Eats began operating at the end of 2015, in the United States, and arrived in Brazil in December of the following year.
Users with in-app credits can spend them on restaurant deliveries until March 7. After that, they can use the value in other services offered by the company.
It is not the first time that delivery and transport applications have decided to stop operating in Brazil. In 2019, the Glovo app, which competed with iFood, Rappi and Uber Eats itself, closed its activities in the country after a year of its arrival, citing difficulties due to high competitiveness.
In June of last year, it was the turn of the Spanish carpooling app Cabify to stop operating in the national territory. The justification was the Covid-19 pandemic and its reflection in the sector.
