The payment of the IPVA (Tax on the Ownership of Motor Vehicles) in cash with a 9% discount starts to expire this Monday (10th) in São Paulo. The deadline ends for owners of cars and motorcycles with a plate ending in 1.
The salary schedule defined by the State Treasury continues until January 21 and always considers the last number of the vehicle’s license plate. Anyone who does not pay the car tax this month will still be able to pay the tax without charging a fine in February. There will be a discount on the amount due, but it will be less than 5%. The rebate will also apply to those who choose to split the debt – in 2022, the installment will be in five installments.

The owner of a vehicle in São Paulo can also anticipate the payment of the mandatory license, which only starts to expire in July. After paying the IPVA in cash and licensing in the accredited banking network, it is possible to issue the digital car document, which is no longer delivered on paper.
Cash payment pays off for those who have the money set aside
In the assessment of financial educator André Medeiros, the driver with a vehicle registered in São Paulo should consider only two possibilities among the three made available by the state government, which are payment with a 9% discount in January and payment in installments.
“If I don’t have an extra benefit to pay in cash [em fevereiro], I would take this option out of my planning and go straight to the installment plan, which also has a 5% discount”, he says.
The system to encourage payment on time presented by the government in 2022 differs from what is usually adopted precisely because it maintains the concession of the discount also for those who adopt the installment plan.
For Medeiros, the cash payment as of this Monday is advantageous, but only for the taxpayer who is also an investor. That is, they keep a fixed reserve for unexpected expenses and have the IPVA money in their spending planning.
This type of taxpayer will also have their budget at the beginning of the year less pressured by the increase in the final value of the IPVA. The tax rate has not changed and is still 4% for vehicles powered by gasoline and biofuels, but the appreciation of used cars made the amount to be paid rise, on average, 22.54%.
“Considering the five possible installments, you hardly find an application on the market that pays more than 2% per month. In a simple account, the 9% discount makes the payment in cash very advantageous”, says the financial educator.
The expert points out, however, that this advantage only exists for those who really have the emergency money set aside. For those who are in debt or keep a tight budget, hypotheses such as loans should be ruled out.
“Whoever is in debt, regardless of the level, should not get another debt. If the person has the bills up to date, but has no surplus, he will end up taking on a debt that can cause problems down the road.”
Drivers in these situations should then consider paying in installments, says the expert. For him, the 5% cash discount, provided for payment from February 10, is innocuous from the debtor’s perspective. “If you don’t have the money to pay cash now, with a bigger discount, you’ll hardly have it in February.”
Failure to pay IPVA subjects the car owner to a fine of 0.33% per day of delay plus interest calculated by the Selic (the basic interest rate, currently at 9.25% per year). After 60 days of delay, the fine becomes 20% of the amount due.
How to check the tax amount
The consultation of the tax amount and the payment can be made in the various channels of the banking network, such as applications, self-service terminals and internet banking. Banco do Brasil, Bradesco and Santander no longer receive the IPVA payment at the cashiers.
On the website of the São Paulo Finance Department there is a page dedicated to consultation; click neste link. To consult, the owner of the car will need to inform the license plate and the number of Renavan, which appears in the vehicle document, the CRLV (Certificate of Vehicle Registration and Licensing).
The system will show the total amount of tax to be paid in cash in January, in cash in February, in addition to the value of each installment, for those who choose to pay the tax in five installments. If the taxpayer used credits from the Nota Fiscal Paulista, the deducted amount will also appear.
