Panel SA: Union supports temporary closure of stores to contain Covid

by

The São Paulo Commerce Workers Union will send employers a statement this week to support the proposal to reduce the opening hours of shopping malls at this time of high contamination by the ômicron variant.

The suggestion of temporarily shortening the operation of the stores was raised by the association of shopkeepers Ablos, as the SA Panel anticipated this Sunday (9).

Ricardo Patah, president of the union, also proposes the resumption of practices discarded during the pandemic, such as measuring the temperature of visitors at the door of establishments and controlling occupation.

“I think that, in this period, we have to go back with that. It’s not to close everything, but to be more careful. And in this period of January, when sales are not so high and many stores don’t have a staff for two shifts, which reduce the opening hours of the malls”, he says.

According to Patah, traders are also asking for tests to be carried out because they are concerned about the increase in contamination in public transport.

“There is no doubt that, because of the vaccines, the consequence is not being lethal. But even so, the situation is worrying, and measures need to be taken jointly between workers, employers and government”, he says.

Abrasce, the association of malls, says that it has followed the situation closely and that the scenarios are different in the establishments. “It requires a single look at each specific case and not a generalized rule that makes the sector unfeasible, since it has already been exposed that malls are capable of operating responsibly and safely”, says the entity in a note.
